Twenty-five twenty-one is an ongoing drama set in 1998, while it captures the dreams, passion, love, and life of five individuals through its screenplay. This drama unravels during the low economic and war-torn society of South Korea, during the late '90s. It shows the sufferings, exploitations, and hardships of the common people when South Korea faced the IMF crisis.
Na Hee Do, a fencing student who dreams to-be like, Go Yoo-rim, a high school fencing gold-medalist, has her hopes crushed when her school disbands the fencing team due to the IMF crisis. She later joins Yoo-rim’s high school to be close with her idol and train along with her. But, Yoo rim only sees Hee Do as her rival, who took away her crown of being the major prodigy in the fencing sport during her childhood. The other main protagonist, Baek Yi-Jin, is a young chaebol from a conglomerate family who went bankrupt due to the IMF crisis. Yi- jin tries hard to make a new chapter in his life while seeking a job in other companies. But, things become increasingly difficult as debtors lash out at him for the bankruptcy.
Will these youth be able to follow their passions and rise to success? Or, will the hardships of the country’s torn economy get the better of them? Will Hee Do and Yi Jin be able to rekindle their affections after five years? Will Yoo rim be able to get over her jealousy of Hee Do and be friends with her? These are a few questions that will get answered with coming episodes.
This ongoing drama is an interesting watch as it is realistic and does not shy away from showing the troubles faced by the laymen during the IMF crisis. Even though this drama approaches things slowly and might test your patience, they have their way to hook you with the narration. Moreover, Kim Tae-ri and Nam Joo-hyuk's acting are another pluses of this drama. They have outdone themselves in this coming-of-age drama, while they bring out innocence and helplessness through their actions which will make the audiences' hearts pound for them.
Do not forget to catch this sweet drama every Saturday and Sunday only on NETFLIX.
